Love Knows No Gender

What is gender? Just by this word, I get so confused. Does gender equate to sex? Meaning, does gender refer to sex? But what is sex in the first place? Was it the act of lovemaking?
If sex only meant one thing and that is, the union of both masculine and feminine presence, or if you like it the simplest, albeit traditional way – the penetration, then there is no point debating nor arguing about how sex should not be related at all to gender.
